A competent person is someone who has sufficient skill, knowledge, and experience. They are also adequate but not exceptional. In life, a person should be competent, but they should also have additional qualities to that.
You should be able to be a person who can know the facts of life and be able to succeeded in the best ways possible. As a person grows up, the more they know, the better they will be. The knowledge of just one subject will not be sufficient enough to help them in every day problems.
